The Structures Group, Inc. (TSG) provided the structural engineering design and construction administration services for the Belle Isle State Park Visitors Center, constructed along the north shore of the Rappahannock River within Lancaster County, Virginia. The 4,000 square foot, 2,000,000 dollar, state park structure is used to provide exhibit, educational, and administrative spaces at the Belle Isle State Park.
The Commonwealth of Virginia required the building to be constructed to meet the requirements of LEED Silver sustainable green design practices, which included but were not limited to the use of structural insulated panels (RF innovation in design, credit ID-1), engineered timber products (innovation in design, credit ID-1), green concrete elements (recycled content, credit MR-4, local regional materials, credit MR-5), tube type skylights (daylight and views, credit EQ-8), and photo voltaic arrays (renewable energy, credit EA-2). Utilizing exposed Parallam and metal plate trusses to clear span from front to rear, the facility provided a complimentary atmosphere for environmental education and conservation.
