The Structures Group, Inc. (TSG) provided the forensic analysis of the exterior brick veneer on the Newport News Public Safety Building located at 224 26th Street within the City of Newport News, Virginia. The seven (7) story building is a cast-in-place concrete structure with two-way concrete slabs spanning between concrete columns that are supported at the foundation level by a concrete pile foundation. The exterior walls of the building consist of masonry veneer walls as well as limestone panels at the second floor level as well as the roof level. Due to the size of the structure and limited access, drone video was utilized to develop a more in-depth review of the surface of the masonry veneer wall surface.
Upon completing the analysis, structural design and development of structural construction drawings were provided for the masonry repairs to the exterior of the structure. The remedial repair documents were accompanied by order of magnitude cost estimates for completing the project as a whole, as well as in phases. At the conclusion of the bidding phase, the costs associated with the repairs were below the budget, which was based on the TSG estimates.
