January 2021 | TSG Welcomes Joshua Artz, EIT

Here's to the start of a bright and healthy 2021. Joshua Artz, EIT joined TSG in early January. Josh is a Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT) graduate and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structures. He was named to the Dean's List the majority of his semesters at VT. While there, he served as a mentor liason for his engineering Living-Learning Community as well as the Director of Outreach for the Theme Park Engineering and Design Group. Welcome aboard, Josh!

 

September 2018 |TSG Presents Hands On Engineering Workshop to Students

TSG President and Founder, Mike Matthews, P.E., visited middle school science students at Walsingham Academy. An interactive presentation culminating with a tower building challenge activity introduced 7th grade STEM students to the exciting field of structural engineering.

 

June 2018 |TSG Recognized at ACEC Convention

TSG was recognized for its 26 years of continued participation in the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia at the 50th ACEC of Virginia Annual Convention, June 14th‐18th, at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia.

 

June 2018 | TSG Invited to Present at VBCOA Annual Conference

TSG has been invited by the Virginia Building and Code Officials Association to speak at the 89th Annual Conference at the Williamsburg Lodge, September 15th‐18th. Michael A. Matthews, P.E. will present Special Inspections: Guide to the IBC 2015 Edition.


May 2018 | Polk Passes P.E. Exam

TSG is proud to announce that Kyle Polk, who began his career at TSG as an E.I.T. in 2014, has successfully passed the Commonwealth of Virginia Professional Engineers Exam. Congrats to Kyle!


December 2017 | Ambrose Completes Residential Building Inspection Course

Continuing working towards becoming a Certified Building Plans Examiner, Alan Ambrose, E.I.T. completed the Building Inspections – Residential class administered by the Virginia Building Code Academy.


October 2017 | Ambrose Completes Plans Review and Commercial Building Inspection Coursework

Continuing working towards becoming a Certified Building Plans Examiner, Alan Ambrose, E.I.T. completed the Plans Review – Structural as well as the Building Inspections ‐ Commercial classes administered by the Virginia Building Code Academy.


August 2017 | Ambrose Completes Building Code Core Class

Working towards becoming a Certified Building Plans Examiner, Alan Ambrose, E.I.T. completed the Core class administered by Jack A. Proctor Virginia Building Code Academy. The Virginia Building Code Academy is promulgated by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

 

July 2017 | TSG Awarded 3rd Term Contract with City of Newport News

TSG has been awarded this 5‐year renewable annual service term contract for the third consecutive time and is currently working on the forensic analysis and structural exterior remedial repairs to the Public Safety Building in downtown Newport News.

 

May 2017 | TSG Welcomes New E.I.T. Joseph Krallinger

Joe is a graduate of Old Dominion University where he earned Dean’s List Honors every semester and served as Vice President of the ASCE student chapter as well as Team Leader of the Concrete Canoe team. Welcome aboard Joe.

 

November 2016 | TSG Awarded 3rd Term Contract with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs

The Structures Group was recently awarded an annual service term contract with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. This annual service term contract has a 5 year renewable term to perform forensic analysis, structural inspections, and structural analysis for VDFP. This will be the third, yes we are proud, 5 year renewable annual contract dating back to 2006. We enjoy and greatly appreciate the opportunity to be of continued service to VDFP!


April 2016 | Stryker Center Awarded LEED Silver Rating

The City of Williamsburg’s newest municipal building opened March 1, 2016. TSG provided the structural design and special inspections for the facility. With the architectural planning and design performed by Stemann Pease. This new facility achieved a LEED Silver rating.

 

March 2016 | TSG Welcomes New E.I.T. Nicholas Dreybus

Nick is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, where he earned Dean’s List Honors every semester and served as President of the ASCE student chapter as well as Captain of the Cadet Drumline.

July 2015 | TSG Invited to Speak at ArchEX

The Structures Group has been selected to speak at Architecture Exchange East, an annual conference for building design and construction professionals. The firm will present Special Inspections: Guide to the IBC 2012 Edition. The presentation, which will be held at the Richmond Convention Center, will provide attendees 1.5 continuing education units (CEUs).

June 2015 | Thomas Rises to TSG Stockholder/Principal

Charlie Thomas, PE began his career with TSG as an Engineer In Training (EIT) in 2005. Since that time, Charlie earned his Professional Engineer license and quickly became a trusted and valuable team member on numerous design projects. As a Principal with TSG, Charlie's day-to-day role will continue as Structural Engineering Manager as he also begins to share in the planning and operations of the firm.

 

March 2015 | TSG Speaks at Building Officials Conference

TSG President, Michael Matthews, with assistance from Kyle Polk, EIT, presented Special Inspections: A Practical Guide to the 2012 Edition of the IBC to an annual gathering of 85 Commonwealth of Virginia building officials from Region 8. The talk centered around the history, development, purposes, and goals of Special Inspections as well as recent changes to IBC requirements and professional reponsibilities in the Special Inspections process. Region 8 consists of Accomack, Cape Charles, Chincoteague, Franklin, Hampton, Isle of Wight, James City County, Newport News, Northampton, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Southampton, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and York County.

October 2014 | TSG Adds Texas - Now Licensed in 20 States Plus D.C.

Retained as the Structural Engineer for a boiler plant at Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, The Structures Group, Inc. , as well as Michael A. Matthews, P.E., are now licensed to provide structural engineering services in the State of Texas.

 

September 2014 | TSG Welcomes New EIT- Kyle Polk

The Structures Group, Inc. would like to welcome Kyle Polk to its structural engineering staff. Kyle is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. His prior experience includes inspection work with Electric Boat Corporation and Newport News Shipbuilding where he provided on-site inspection and engineering support for construction. As an Engineer in Training with TSG, Kyle will expand his industrial experience initially through special inspections and forensic analysis. His previous technical writing skills will be utilized in the detailed development of the construction documents specifications for our major industrial projects.

 

June 2014 | TSG Awarded City of Newport News Annual Services Contract

The Structures Group, Inc. (TSG) was recently awarded an annual services contract with the City of Newport News, Virginia. This year term annual services contract includes structural analysis, bridge design, geotechnical analysis and design, bridge scour/inspections, and other general civil engineering needs as they may arise throughout the contract term. TSG has been awarded the same contract in previous years and is currently working on structural design and inspection services for the Oyster Point Pump Stations.

 

June 2014 | Brian Wells, S.E. Promoted to Structural Engineer

Brian T. Wells, S.E. of The Structures Group, Inc. (TSG) recently passed the two (2) day Structural Engineering Exam and has been promoted from Engineer in Training to Structural Engineer. Brian has been with TSG for five (5) years and has worked on many projects for clients including the Williamsburg Landing, Kingsmill Resort and Conference Center, Settlers Market, King of Glory Church, and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. He earned his Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering and Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Additionally, Brian is a certified ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician and CSI Construction Document Technologist.

 

As a Structural Engineer with TSG, Brian is responsible for the structural analyses and detailed development of the construction documents of our major project designs. His experience is enhanced by site visits and field inspection of projects in progress, including the IBC required Special Inspections of cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, masonry, and timber. Further, his experience is bolstered by performing forensic analysis in review of structural damage to residential and commercial buildings resulting from either design or construction deficiencies, as well as man-made catastrophic and natural disaster events. Outside of the office Brian is the coordinator for the Tidewater Ultimate Frisbee winter league.

 

April 2014 | Virginia Code Officials Joint Conference Presentation

The Structures Group, Inc. President, Michael Matthews, P.E. presented a special seminar entitled Special Inspections - A Practical Guide at the 2014 Virginia Code Officials Joint Conference in Richmond. Attendees respresented both the Virginia Building and Code Officials Association (VBCOA) and the Virginia Plumbing and Mechanical Inspectors Association (VPMIA).

December 2013 | ACEC Engineering Excellence Award

The Structures Group, Inc. was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies with an Engineering Excellence Honor Award at the organization's annual awards event in Richmond in February. The firm was selected for outstanding work performed at Williamsburg Landing, a continuing care retirement community located in Williamsburg, Virginia.

September 2013 | Expansion Joints in Brick Veneer

The Structures Group, Inc. (TSG) staff presented a seminar at the 2013 Virginia Engineers Conference to be held at the Williamsburg Lodge. This educational conference is an annual statewide event directed towards all engineers and principals of engineering firms in the state of Virginia.  It is jointly sponsored by the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers (VSPE) and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia (ACEC/Virginia). We hope to see you there.

 

May 2013 | Kingspoint Club Expansion

Congratulations to Kingspoint Club which celebrated the Memorial Day weekend opening of pool season with a new pool amenities building and an expanded pool deck. Kingspoint Club had previously added a new pumphouse and replaced its fifty (50) year old clubhouse with a new clubhouse in the first phase of facility improvements. TSG provided the structrual design and construction administration for each of these projects. We loved the card sent to us by the Kingspoint Board of Directors, thanking the TSG team for helping to make their vision a reality!

 

May 2013 | TSG Welcomes New EIT - Alan Ambrose

The Structures Group, Inc. welcomed Alan Ambrose to its structural engineering staff in May. Mr. Ambrose earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Civil Engineering - Structural Emphasis degree from North Carolina State University where he also served as a peer mentor and as Vice President of the Native American Student Association. His prior experience includes work with Al Anderson Construction where projects included the demolition and re-purposing of existing structures. Mr. Ambrose was a recipient of the Wayne and Mozelle Thompson Scholarship and the Billy Rose Scholarship.

 

April 9, 2013 | Failure to Plan: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

TSG President & CEO, Michael A. Matthews, P.E., teamed up with Tony L. Cummings, AIA of Construction Forensic, Inc. to present a construction forensics seminar at Kansas State University entitled Failure to Plan: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?. The seminar focused on the causes and prevention of structural failures and was sponsored by the University’s Department of Architecture, Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science, and the Flint Hills AIA.

November 8, 2012 | TSG Staff Speaks at the AIA’s Mid-Atlantic ArchEX Event

TSG staff was selected and invited to speak at ArchEX, the AIA’s largest event in the Mid-Atlantic. The TSG team presented a seminar entitled Life Support to Assisted Living: A Study of Structural Rehab. The talk focused on structural  analysis and on the careful design and planning of remedial repairs for an occupied senior living facility. The event was held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Virginia.

 

September 20, 2012 | TSG Presents at the Virginia Engineers Conference

Michael A. Matthews, P.E., President  & CEO and Scott M. Francis, P.E., Director of Structural Engineering at The Structures Group, Inc. presented a case study at the annual Virginia Engineers Conference.  The case study involved the structural analysis and design of structural repairs to an occupied, multi-story cast in place concrete two (2) way slab assisted living facility. The presentation focused on helping attendees develop a deeper understanding of the root causes of structural failures and the design of code-driven remedial repairs that protect the life and safety of the pubic while minimizing inconvenience to the client/building occupants.

 

Summer 2012 | Kingsmill Resort Opens New Marina Restaurant and The River Pool Complex

Kingsmill Resort opens the James Landing Grille and a new family pool and lazy river complex. The Structures Group,  Inc. was thrilled to be a part of helping the resort bring these exciting visions to life. TSG is currently working on 18 guest cottages which are being constructed along the banks of the James River, within the resort.

May 2012 | Fort Lee Project Receives LEED Gold Certification

The 508th Transportation Company -  Company Operations Facility at Fort Lee receives LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Structures Group, Inc. was proud to partner with Guernsey Tingle Architects,  PACE Collaborative, P.C. and Leebcor Services, LLP on this project, which was designed in Revit. More
