James Landing Grille
Kingmill Resort
James City County, Virginia
The Structures Group, Inc. (TSG) provided the structural design, construction administration, and special inspections for the James Landing Grille, situated on the shore of the James River within the prestigious Kingsmill Resort owned by Xanterra. Located within a Riparian Protection Area (RPA), as defined in the Chesapeake Preservation Act (CPA), the project required careful adherence to site development constraints. Creative engineering solutions and early collaboration with the county allowed the design team to accomplish a successful re-development of the property while adhering to the building limits of the protected site. In order to respect CPA requirements, the new structure was designed to sit within the footprint of a pre-existing single story, open air restaurant by utilizing augered steel helical piles to support the larger two (2) story structure on the edge of the sloping riverbank.
The new 4,000 square foot building was the first phase of an ambitious ten (10) year plan designed to enhance the resort, which hosted the 2012 LPGA Kingsmill Championship tournament, by improving amenities and better leveraging the resort’s picturesque waterfront setting. The new two (2) story restaurant features stunning views of the James River with two (2) floors of indoor seating that allow for year-round dining, as well as expansive decking which provides space for waterfront seating and live entertainment.
The greatest compliment to a firm is repeated requests for continued services. Following completion of this facility and a successful year of operation, Kingsmill retained TSG to extend the exterior trellis system 1,300 square feet over the western half of the deck.
