SunTrust Office Building
James City County, Virginia
Working as the structural design consultant to W.M. Jordan for this design/build project, The Structures Group, Inc. (TSG) provided the structural engineering design, independent building code plan review, and special inspections for the 7.1 million dollar, 60,000 square foot, three story SunTrust commercial office building located within the pre-planned New Town section of James City County, Virginia. The SunTrust building was the first of many structures to be designed by TSG and constructed in New Town. Built on a steep ravine, this structural steel frame facility also incorporated significant cast-in-place concrete retaining wall foundations to facilitate construction in this natural setting.
During construction, a change of tenant occupancy on an upper floor resulted in a significant change in the required floor loading. Changes in the structural design to accommodate the unique occupancy were handled swiftly and without impeding the construction of the building. The Structures Group, Inc. also provided construction administration services for the structural building components, as well as serving as the Agent I Special Inspector, as part of the code required Special Inspections. Serving as the Structural Engineer of Record and the Special Inspector, all field related construction questions or deviations were immediately resolved.
Services Provided: Structural Engineering Design, Code Compliance Review, Construction Administration, Special Inspections
